How to Prepare a Logo File for Mug Printing
Before a logo is applied to a mug, make sure you have the correct version of the file at the right size. Attaching an image to an email does not automatically make it print-ready. The file’s structure, its position on the mug and the production proof all need to be considered together.
Prefer vector artwork, but do not rely on the file extension alone
Vector graphics are made from lines and shapes, so their edges remain sharp when they are enlarged. Pixel-based PNG or JPEG images contain a fixed number of pixels and may become blurry when enlarged. Adobe’s explanation of vector and raster files illustrates the difference.
A PDF extension does not necessarily mean that a file contains vector artwork. A PDF can contain vector elements, pixel-based images or both. Ask your designer for the editable master file and a vector version of the logo, if available.
Ask the manufacturer about formats such as AI, EPS, SVG or a PDF containing vector artwork. Before work begins, confirm which file types are accepted and whether your existing image is suitable at the intended print size. Do not assume a fixed DPI requirement; if needed, ask for the technical specifications for the chosen model and dimensions.
Check the logo and its small details
Do not stretch the logo horizontally or vertically. Preserve its proportions and send the correct brand version. Small lettering, thin lines, narrow gaps and tiny icons may be difficult to distinguish at the intended size on the mug. Ask the manufacturer to check whether they can be reproduced. Where possible, share the original artwork rather than sending only a screenshot.
If there are several options, identify the versions clearly in the file names. Rather than leaving old and new designs together without explanation, give the approved file an unambiguous name such as “final” and state in your message which file should be used.
Specify the colour reference and position on the mug
Share the colour code from your brand guidelines or an approved colour sample. A colour on a screen may look different when reproduced on another surface using a particular decoration process. If a brand colour is important, ask how the manufacturer assesses colour matching and whether a physical sample or proof is available.
Identify the product model along with the artwork. Explain which side of the handle the logo should be on, whether it should appear on one or both sides, whether the design will be the same on both sides, and the approximate size and position you want. The printable area varies by model, so agree on a suitable layout for that particular mug. When browsing our ceramic mugs, you can also send a link to the chosen product.
Send the file with a short explanatory note
In the same email or message as the file, include its name, the product model, the requested layout and any brand colour code. If you attach a PNG alongside a PDF only as a preview, state which file should be used for production. This helps prevent confusion between versions and file types.
Review the final proof before production
If the manufacturer sends a visual proof, check the model, logo version, wording, colour reference, dimensions, orientation relative to the handle and single- or double-sided layout before approving it. An on-screen proof cannot fully guarantee the physical result. For critical colour or placement requirements, ask separately whether a physical sample is possible. If a change is needed, revise the file and submit it for approval again.
- Is the final logo file and the version to be used clearly identified?
- Has the artwork been checked to see whether it is vector-based? If it is pixel-based, has the manufacturer confirmed its suitability at the required size?
- Are the colour reference, model, layout and orientation relative to the handle specified in writing?
- Has the correct final proof been clearly approved?
